New Zealand White Rabbit

Amongst the many breeds of the domesticated European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), the albino New Zealand White is the most common breed utilized in biomedical research.

Rabbits of various varieties have provided very useful models in many different areas of biomedical research (embryology, toxicology, virology, etc.), and are also widely used in safety testing (pyrogen, teratogenicity, etc.). They are universally and routinely used in serology because of the readiness with which they produce serum antibodies in response to a wide variety of antigenic stimuli.
